“What do you think?”

“About what?”

“My tasting party.”

“What do I think?” He frowned. “After all this you’re still hosting it? That’s what I’m thinking.”

“I have to--”

“No, you don’t. You’re telling these assholes exactly where you are. You’re putting a glowing beacon right above your head saying come kill me.”

“That’s why I hired you.”

“To what eventually one day watch someone drive a knife through your chest?”

She paused puttin on her eyeliner and looked at him. “Is that--”

“Business must go on.”

Jason didn’t need an introduction to know who that was.

The man walked right past him and kissed his daughter on either cheek. “Papa.”

Vozlyublennaya, my beloved daughter.” He turned his attention to Jason. “Who is this pridurok?”

“He’s leading my personal security.”

“Like hell. I don’t know him.”

She turned back to her makeup. “He stays.”

The man grabbed the eyeliner pencil and threw it across the room. “I do not know him! I do not trust him!”

“Yet he saved my life twice in two weeks.” She was calm. Didn’t seem a bit phase by the man’s outburst.

“How do we know he’s not behind this?”

“If he wanted to kill me he had plenty of opportunity.”

THe man’s face frowned up like he got punched in the gut. “Are you fucking him?”

She rolled her eyes. “It does not matter.”

“Of course it does!”

“You don’t get to disappear for months on end with no word and come storming in here like a bat out of hell making demands and telling me how to run things--”

“You’re mine. I protect what’s mine.”

“Then find out who the hell is trying to kill me. Until then the Major and i have things to discuss. He was going to tell me how he was planning on securing my tasting party.” Those pretty blue grey eyes rested on him.

“I want to bring in my own team. Trained under me. I trust them with my life.”

“Like hell you will.” Her father protested.

“And?” She talked over the man’s grummbles.

“Secure a perimeter. TIght security invite only at the door. Bouncers that won’t take bribes.”

She nodded. “What ever you need.”

“I’ll have you know I already have people working on the real threat.” The man’s glare ate into Jason’s soul but he stood his ground. The father daughter duo obviously had a strange relationship.

“Good then you can tell me what you think.”

“I will say nothing with him in here.”

She rolled her eyes, crossed her arms and nodded him to the door. She walked with him and stopped him at the door with her soft touch. “Tonight pick me up at 11. I’m hosting at Club Kittie for a wine launch party.”

He nodded and walked out closing the door behind him.

“Now what the fuck is going on?”

“You tell me. I leave you alone for a moment and you’re off hiring new faces.”

“It was your men that let someone into my party with a knife to begin with.”

“He’s a military man. Did you know that?”

“They’re the best. You taught me that.”

The man’s permanent scowled converted into a demented smirk. “And you wonder why you’re my favorite.  Come here give your father a hug.”

She loved the man so many people called foe. She knew he was a dark wretch, but that did not sway her heart. She pulled the man in and enhailed the familiar scent of tobacco and his cologne She pulled away a bit. “Now tell me. What the hell is going on? Why is someone trying to kill me?”

“Because you’re mine that’s why.”

“No, I’m a secret that no one is supposed to know about yet everyone fucking knows. FBI at my club, some fucking psycho who knows trying to gut me at a party. Is this your shit? Be straight?”

“The little you know the better.”

She let him go and walked away to get a cigarette from her coat pocket. “That’s what you say to people that don’t matter.” She turned to face her father. “Do I not matter to you? Am I just like all the others?”

The man looked genuinely concerned as he came up on her with a lighter ready to light her cigarette. She crossed her arms. “Don’t charm me Ian.”

He growled and his scowl deepened. “Don’t you call me that.”

“Then don’t you fucking lie to me.”

“There’s a big deal that is going to, and may have already pissed a few people off, but I never bring you into any of it. Your brother is starting to run things.”

“Well, someone opened their mouth because the bodyguard I hired two days ago couldn’t have set all of this up.”

“I don’t like him.”

“Why not?”

“He’s old.”

She laughed. “No older than you were when my mom was my age.”

“I know. That’s why I don’t fucking trust him.”

“Oh please father. The only one trying to fuck is me.” She put the cigarette between her lips and smiled at his look of distaste as he lit her cigarette. She exhaled and closed her eyes as the chemicals played in her mind. “He’s a perfect fucking gentleman and it pisses me off to no end.”

He took the cigarette when she offered it to him. “There are only two reasons why a man would reject a beautiful willing woman.”

“Let me guess--”

“He likes cock or he’s fucking hiding something.”

“You hide stuff all the time.”

The wicked man smiled. “Yeah, but I’d never turn down a pretty pussy.”

“Which is why your wife wants to slit your throat everytime you see her.”

“But she knows her place. This fucking bastard that’s coming for you has no idea what’s coming for him. This goddamn soldier that you hired will beg for death if he’s anything to do with this.”

“If he wanted me dead he had plenty chances. There’s something else going on. I’d put my money on you stirring up shit around the world. What I don’t get is how they even know about me. After all this time?”

“They caught a picture of us maybe.”

“They don’t even know what the hell you actually look like. It’s only ever words.”

“Maybe you get your American spy to find out.”

“He’s not a spy.”

“Don’t let your pussy cloud your judgement.”

She faced the man and stared deep into his eyes. “I learned from you, father. If I ever do that, then it’s your failure and we both know neither of us would let that happen.”

He cupped her face in his palm. “You are my favorite and this is why. Raised to fend for yourself. No silver spoon no name to lean back on. You’re out here doing these deep things on your own. Using your beauty, having these ants eating out your hands.”

“Are you?”

“Am I what?”

“Are you using me to do your dealings? Using my businesses?”

“I would never take anything from you Ianca.”

She took a deep breath and let him pull her into a hug. “I know, Otets. I know.”
